Some things we’ve been working on

Sawmill Apprentices gain full time employment

Mount Stuart Trust Sawmill are delighted to welcome Thomas Morrison and Keiran McGirr (pictured right) to the team as permanent members of staff. Thomas and Keiran were employed by the sawmill through the Young Person’s Guarantee Scheme, run by Argyll and Bute Council. As part of the scheme, every young person aged between 16 and 24 in Scotland has the opportunity to access support to help them into work, based on their own personal circumstances and ambitions. Proving to be both hardworking and reliable employees, both Thomas and Keiran were offered full time positions at the Sawmill on completion of their initial apprenticeship.

Lochend Development

The housing development project at Lochend is underway. To achieve the integral low energy design, the dwellings are designed to the Passivhaus Low Energy Standard, using SIP construction. These passive houses are constructed mainly with material from off the island, with the exception of the cladding which is larch felled and processed through the Sawmill.

Sustainable Biomass

There is nothing more satisfying than processing Biomass at the start of the week. Our timber is sourced from sustainable plantations within a few miles of the sawmill. After being graded and a period of seasoning we convert the timber into Biomass pellets. We provide Biomass heating for a number of homes on the island including Mount Stuart.
